Other Activities at High Lonesome
While most of our guests come to The High Lonesome Ranch for the unmatched quality of our hunting and fishing experiences, there are many other things to do in this part of Colorado.

Whether you prefer the challenge of climbing a mountain or just kicking back with a massage and a winery tour, both and more are available either on the ranch or within a short drive.  Here's a sample of what we have to offer.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding can be enjoyed for a few hours or an entire day and can be arranged for your visit.  Riding across the Colorado countryside will give you a new appreciation for the sheer size of our ranch and take you back in time; a time when horses were the primary means of transportation.  Our wrangler hosts special guided trips that run on or off the ranch all year long.

Hiking & Mountain Biking

With miles and miles of trails and dirt roads on the ranch, there is an almost endless variety of terrain available to the hiker and mountain biker.  There are numerous points of interest in the surrounding mountains and valleys.  Enjoy clear blue skies and cool breezes as you explore our valleys, wooded aspen groves and evergreen timber.

Take along a picnic lunch and travel up to the "top of the world" where the ranch property meets the breathtaking Book Cliffs.  Look over the city of Grand Junction, the Colorado River and far into the state of Utah.  Here you are likely to see birds of prey soaring so closely you can almost touch them.  Keep an eye out for our other abundant wildlife - deer, elk, turkeys, pheasants, beavers, bears and mountain lions.

Winter at The High Lonesome Ranch

Winter is a special time at High Lonesome offering guests a relaxing retreat from the busy world.  Many guests don't realize we stay open all year round and offer an array of activities suited to the cold weather.  Whether it's hiking, riding, or skiing at nearby Powderhorn, there's plenty to do.  What could be better than skiing all day then returning to the quiet and comfort of the ranch for one of Aunt Linda's memorable dinners?

Riding, hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are all possible either on the ranch or in the surrounding area.  Warm your soul with some hot chocolate or fragrant coffee before heading out to the peaceful tranquility of snow dusted mountains and crisp blue skies.  As you quietly ride, hike or bike along, be on the lookout for one of the many elk herds wintering here at The High Lonesome Ranch.  Winter is also a great time to shoot a round of sporting clays and wing shooting is available until March 1.

Rafting

The Colorado River offers some of the best white water rafting in the country.  If you or someone in your party is looking for a wetter diversion, we can arrange a trip with one of the professional rafting companies located within easy driving distance.

Golfing

The High Lonesome Ranch is located less than an hour from the city of Grand Junction where there are a number of public and private courses.  In fact the nearest course, Battlement Mesa, is just 20 minutes from the ranch.  Over 20 top rated golf courses are located in the Colorado River Valley, including the nearby Redlands Mesa course, rated the 17th best public course in the U.S. and the #1 rated public course in Colorado.

Winery Tours

The lush Colorado River Valley hosts a number of vineyards that are home to over a dozen wineries offering tours and tastings throughout the year.

Massage & Spas

For those days when you just want to sit back, relax and be pampered, The High Lonesome Ranch has a new, private, secluded massage room and can arrange for a trained masseuse. Arrange an appointment and let the stress melt away. Perhaps you'd like a little more indulgence. There are numerous day spas in nearby Grand Junction and the famous Yampah Spa & Salon in Glenwood Springs is only an hour away.

Other Nearby Sights

In addition to all the wonderful opportunities at ranch, we recommend taking a day to view some of the fabulous sights and attractions.  One of the few remaining wild horse herds runs free right along side The High Lonesome Ranch in the Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Area.  There are also historic Native American artifacts and natural sandstone columns known as the Goblins easily reached by a short drive from the lodge.

The well-known towns of Glenwood Springs (famous for its large natural hot spring pool), Vail and Aspen are all within a relatively short drive.  The staff at The High Lonesome Ranch is more than happy to escort you or arrange a visit to any of these places.
