The High Lonesome Ranch

November 8, 2011, HLR & High Lonesome Institute Announce Appointment of Dr. Hal Salwasser

Esteemed High Lonesome Ranch friends, partners, benefactors, and colleagues,

I am writing to give you some very good news. I have recently appointed Hal Salwasser as Consulting Director for the High Lonesome Institute. He will be directing and guiding the process of founding and forming the Institute over the next two years, and will direct the search for a permanent Institute director. Hal brings with him several decades of expertise in the USDA Forest Service as National Wildlife Ecologist, Deputy Director Fish, Wildlife and Rare Plants in DC, Regional Forester in the Northern Rockies and as Director of the Pacific Southwest Research Station in California; as the Boone and Crockett Professor of Wildlife Conservation The University of Montana; and as the Dean of the College of Forestry and Director of the Oregon Forest Research Laboratory at Oregon State University. We are very fortunate to have Hal’s participation and guidance in developing The High Lonesome Ranch (HLR) related science, conservation education, and outreach. – Paul R. Vahldiek, Jr., Owner

The mission statement for the High Lonesome describes a "model of sustainability" that preserves stewardship of a large western landscape, maintains biodiversity and ecological connectivity, enhances the lives of wildlife and fish, and preserves and restores degraded habitat while allowing a mix of uses — primarily ranching, recreation, and research.
