The habitat you will be hunting will include ponderosa pines, pinyon juniper, and gambel oak. Turkey hunts are also great to pair with other Ranch activities.

Hunt Spring and Fall turkey seasons at The HLR
Chase gobblers in the Spring or hunt both hens and toms in the Fall at The High Lonesome Ranch. While these game birds can be elusive and test the most experienced and patient sportsmen, spring is the season when their bravado and the desire to mate overpower their good sense. Calling in the Spring is a great tactic for entice the toms to come in for a close shot.
Fall turkey season in Colorado allows you to tag turkeys of either sex. As winter approaches, their focus is on calorie intake and their movements throughout the day will carry them out and back to roost again as they move around to hit their food at its peak throughout the day. Seasoned hunters say that fall turkey hunts are the time to hone your skills as you get a deeper chance to observe the hens’ and jakes’ behaviors and calls. Don’t be shy about practicing your imitations of the hens’ calls either. Getting those purrs, clucks, and cuts will set you up for a successful take on your next spring hunt as those sounds done right are an irresistible draw to the gobblers.

Hunting permits can be purchased over-the-counter at The High Lonesome Ranch Mercantile.
- ID and proof of residency (for Colorado residents)
- Proof of hunter education
- Habitat Stamp (for anyone ages 18-64)
- Your social security number for hunters aged 12 and older
